The examples are numerous. Buildings such as the AT&T Global Olympic Village in Atlanta (1996) and the Coca-Cola Pavilion in Salt Lake City (2002), were erected specifically for the Olympic Games. At the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla., the Cirque du Soleil Theatre plays host to performances by the famous circus troupe. At the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, audiences at the 10,000-seat multi-purpose outdoor arena enjoy the comfort of shade structures which cover the grandstands. In San Jose, Calif., families congregate beneath the canopy next to the Children’s Carousel at the Arena Green, a popular downtown attraction in the city’s Guadalupe River Park and Gardens.

The Atlantic City Laser Lighthouse welcomes visitors from the New Jersey Expressway to the famous shore destination. As day turns to dusk, a laser show is displayed against the 90-foot-tall structure, which echoes the city’s famed Absecon Lighthouse, changing the lighthouse’s simple white edifice into an illuminating show of vibrant colors.

Such vibrancy is not limited to colors, however.

Perhaps no other structures benefit from tensile fabric membrane and architectural cable structure technology quite like amphitheaters. From large-scale amphitheaters like the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center in The Woodlands, Texas, and the Freedom Ring at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines to modest bandshells across the Florida coast, fabric membrane is lightweight and virtually transparent to low frequency noise (dampening up to 63 Hz). No other material lends itself to such exceptional sound transmittance.
