Talisman Centre for Sport and Wellness in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, will soon receive an updated 162,000 square-foot tensile roofing system from Birdair.

The full-service athletic facility’s current tensile roof will be replaced with an updated Tensotherm™ with Lumira™ aerogel roofing system. Talisman Centre will be the second facility in the world to incorporate a Tensotherm roofing system. The new roof will match the look of the facility’s current roof, originally installed in 1983, while providing five times the existing insulation value and solving condensation problems.

Developed by Birdair, Cabot Corporation and Geiger Engineers, Tensotherm™ consists of a Lumira™ aerogel sandwiched between two layers of structural PTFE fiberglass membrane. This creates an insulated, energy-efficient inner layer that maintains translucency and promotes natural daylighting.

The project is slated for completion in early 2011. A renewed Talisman Centre will help provide sport and wellness services to the facility’s 1,800 daily visitors.
