January 31, 2013 Historic Estadio Mineirão Receives a Modern Transformation with Birdair Roof – Brazilian Facility to Host 2014 World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympic Football Events
Estadio Mineirão in Belo Horizonte, Brazil has been transformed into a modern stadium with a new tensile roofing system from Birdair, Inc. The stadium recently reopened after a three-year modernization project to prepare for the 2014 Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics. Birdair fabricated and supplied TiO2 - coated PTFE, a Teflon®-coated woven fiberglass membrane for the facility's 136,000 square-foot tensile roofing system. December 04, 2012 Birdair Modular Structures Create Open, Airy Event Space at South Bend Convention Center – Form Meets Function to Transform Island Park
The site of a former power plant located at Century Center Convention Center in South Bend, IN is now home to four linked modular fabric structures by Birdair, Inc. As part of Birdair's standard product lines, the Quasar modular structures provide shade and protection for outdoor events such as lunches, receptions and wedding ceremonies. The tensile membrane pavilion resides on the 11-acre Island Park and utilizes approximately 7,900 square feet of PTFE fiberglass membrane. The Quasar structures specified for the project feature a center column and a hyperbolic paraboloid profile that resembles a saddle. Read full press release >>
November 27, 2012 Birdair, Inc. Wins 2012 IFAI Outstanding Achievement Award – Company Recognized For Work on Amber Interactive Center
Birdair, Inc. is the recipient of a 2012 Outstanding Achievement Award for design excellence in specialty fabrics applications from the Industrial Fabrics Association International (IFAI) for its work on for the Amber Interactive Center in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. The Amber Interactive Center, also known as Centro Ambar, earned the IFAI Outstanding Achievement Award in the Frame-Supported Structures category. October 23, 2012 University of Wisconsin Boasts New Innovative Insulated Roof from Birdair – Roof Retrofit at McClain Athletic Facility Improves Daylighting, Insulation and Energy Efficiency
Student athletes at the University of Wisconsin now practice under a Tensotherm™ insulated translucent membrane roof at the McClain Athletic Facility in Madison, WI. As part of the university's new $76.8 million "Athletic Village" development, the roof at the training facility was upgraded from non-insulated PTFE constructed by Birdair in 1988 to a new 41,920-square- foot Tensotherm™ roof. Birdair, Inc. served as the roofing contractor and provided design-build services for the roof retrofit. The new Tensotherm™ roof allows McClain Athletic Facility to maintain the look of its previous roof featuring tensile barrel vaults and standing seam metal roofing. October 4, 2012 Amber Interactive Center Features Distinctive "Brain-Inspired" Tensile Structure From Birdair, Inc. – Drug Education Facility Features Mexico's First TiO2-coated PTFE Structure
Designed by renowned Mexican architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez and his firm ICH, Birdair, Inc. recently completed the fabrication and installation of a 34,800 square foot TiO2-coated PTFE fiberglass membrane roof for the Amber Interactive Center in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico. This iconic structure was inspired by the human brain and serves as a drug awareness, prevention and educational center for the youth of Mexico. The left and right "hemispheres" of the structure match the asymmetry of the brain and pay homage to the different functions of each side. The design of the structure is split by a band of glass with a smooth half-dome on one side and two overlapping domes on the other side. Read full press release >>
September 27, 2012 La Plata Stadium Receives IABSE Outstanding Structure Award – Argentinian Venue Features Fabric Roofing System From Birdair, Inc.
La Plata Stadium in La Plata, Argentina, which features a tensile roofing system from Birdair, Inc., has received an Outstanding Structure Award from the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineers (IABSE). The award recognizes "remarkable, innovative, creative, or otherwise stimulating structures" and was presented to Buenos Aires Province, the stadium's owner, at the 22nd Jornadas Argentinas de Ingeniería Estructural (Congress of Argentinean Structural Engineers) on September 5, 2012. The IABSE Outstanding Structure Award was established in 1998 and is one of the most prominent distinctions awarded by the IABSE. Each year, the IABSE bestows the award on one structure and presents diplomas to the owner for distribution to parties involved in the planning, design and construction of the awarded structure. September 12, 2012 Plaza Las Américas Welcomes Shoppers with Tensile Roofing From Birdair, Inc. – PTFE Lends Distinct Look and Functionality to Mexico Shopping Center
Plaza Las Américas, a shopping mall in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico, now features a custom tensile membrane structure. Birdair, Inc. fabricated the membrane as well as provided technical supervision during the installation. This true tension PTFE fiberglass membrane structure features a cable-supported "flying sails" design with supporting steel masts The PTFE fiberglass membrane roof covers the mall's outdoor food court and creates a unique focal point for the shopping destination. The structure can be seen from outside with the PTFE membrane sails jutting out from the second floor and extending over the mall's first floor terrace. The masts were custom designed and high strength cables were used to provide its characteristic shape creating a signature look for the shopping mall and also the town of Morelia. September 4, 2012 Birdair, Inc. Enlisted for Denver International Airport Roof Support Project – Two Temporary Shoring Towers to Carry "Mountain Range" PTFE Fabric Roof Load During Airport Construction
Construction is underway at Denver International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the United States, and the 11th most frequented in the world. The South Terminal Redevelopment Project (STRP) aims to reinvent the way DIA connects to the city by providing travelers easier access to downtown Denver. The STRP, a program targeted at developing major hospitality and transportation amenities, will require two temporary shoring towers to support Birdair's iconic fabric membrane tent roof. The current roof anchorage points obstruct the construction of a new hotel and conference center, an open-air public plaza and a transit station. Birdair's project role involves designing and building the steel shoring towers, which will carry the vertical and horizontal roof loads. The towers extend 30 feet below grade and rise 70 feet above ground. Once the shoring towers are erected, Birdair will transfer the 215,000-pound roof load and remove eight roof anchors that comprise the south end roof "eyebrow," which is currently blocking excavation. August 21, 2012 Birdair Structure with PTFE and Photovoltaic Panels Provides Shade and Power for Staten Island Children's Museum
Visitors to the Staten Island Children's Museum in Staten Island, NY will learn about renewable energy from a new 2,200 square-foot Birdair freestanding tensile structure featuring a translucent, photovoltaic fabric roof that collects solar energy to power low-voltage lighting. The museum's latest addition is called the Meadow Structure and features a 3,000 square-foot tensile roof featuring Birdair's steel cable systems and PTFE, a Teflon®-coated woven fiberglass membrane combined with thin-film photovoltaic panels. July 31, 2012 Birdair to Crown Two Brazil World Cup and Olympic Host Venues with PTFE – Estádio Mineirão and Estádio Nacional to Renovate Facilities with Birdair Tensile Roofs
"Construction is underway in Brazil as the country prepares to host the 2014 Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics. Birdair through its subsidiary Taiyo Birdair do Brasil (TBB), Ltda. of São Paulo, Brazil has been awarded contracts to assist with the modernization of two event venues, and the construction of a brand new venue. For the World Cup, several venues are undergoing extensive renovations to get the country ready for the high profile event. All together there are two new, five renovated, and five re-built stadium facilities being constructed for the World Cup event. There are many factors to consider in renovation versus new-build, including, facility requirements, time and budget constraints, site location, logistics, and historical significance. "A shopping center in Mexico's capital city will soon have enhanced daylighting, durability and visual appeal thanks to Birdair. The company will serve as roofing subcontractor for Coyoacan Oasis shopping center in Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico. April 10, 2012 Birdair Wins Piscina Olympica Retrofit Roofing Contract – Aquatic Facility to Upgrade From PVC to PTFE
"Government officials in La Paz, Bolivia are modernizing Piscina Olympica, an aquatic facility that was originally built for the 1977 Bolivarian Games. The Piscina Olympica's eye-catching, concave roof will be updated from PVC to PTFE, a Teflon®-coated woven fiberglass membrane. Birdair, Inc. was awarded the Piscina Olympica roofing subcontract to remove the existing roof, install the new perimeter clamping and to install the PTFE roof. March 13, 2012 Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex to Feature Tensile Canopies From Birdair, Inc. – PTFE, Originally Developed for NASA, to Provide Daylighting, Shade and Protection
"Construction of a permanent home for the Space Shuttle Atlantis is currently underway at The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Merritt Island, FL, one of Florida's most popular destinations with more than 1.5 million visitors annually. August 2, 2011 The Minneapolis Metrodome Sports a New Roof From Birdair, Inc. – Roof Replacement Completed in Five Months in Time for NFL Preseason Football
"Birdair, Inc., the leading specialty contractor of lightweight long-span roofing systems and tensile structures throughout the world, has completed the roof replacement for the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, MN. Birdair served as roofing subcontractor for the facility, fabricating and installing a new roof on an aggressive five-month timeline after a snow and ice storm caused the facility's previous roof to deflate in December 2010. The company installed the Metrodome's original roof in 1982 and replaced the structure's 10-acre roof with more than 700,000 square feet of PTFE fiberglass outer and liner membrane material. The newly designed shelters feature approximately 6,440 square feet of PTFE fiberglass membrane. "Haddad Riverfront Park in Charleston, WV, which features three fiberglass fabric membrane roof and façade cladding systems from Birdair, Inc., has received an Honor Award for Excellence in Architecture from the West Virginia chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). As the project's design-build roofing subcontractor, Birdair constructed the TiO2-coated PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene or Teflon®) fabric membrane canopies. March 29, 2011 La Plata Stadium Features Tensile Fabric Roofing System From Birdair, Inc. – Argentina Venue is the First PTFE-Covered Stadium in South America
"Birdair, Inc., the leading specialty contractor of lightweight long-span roofing systems and tensile structures throughout the world, has completed the tensile roofing system for La Plata Stadium in La Plata, Argentina. Birdair engineered, fabricated and oversaw the installation of the cable structure and fabric roof for the South American stadium. Birdair served as roofing subcontractor for the 53,000-seat capacity stadium, which features 312,545 square feet of tensile roof utilizing Birdair's steel cable systems and PTFE, a Teflon®-coated woven fiberglass membrane. The fabric is capable of withstanding temperatures from minus 100° F to 450° F. It is also immune to UV rays, waterproof, and flame resistant. March 17, 2011 Birdair, Inc. to Retrofit Metrodome Roof – New Roof to be Ready for 2011 Preseason Games
"Birdair, Inc., the leading specialty contractor of lightweight long-span roofing systems and tensile structures throughout the world, has been awarded the roof replacement contract for the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, MN. The company installed the Metrodome's original roof in 1982 and will serve as roofing contractor for the Minneapolis attraction, replacing the structure's current ten-acre roof with more than 700,000 square feet of PTFE fiberglass outer and liner membrane material. "Over 80,000 visitors are expected to attend the biggest football game of the year at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, which features a tensioned membrane retractable roofing system from Birdair, Inc. Birdair served as the roofing subcontractor for the project, supplying and installing the structure's PTFE Teflon coated fiberglass membrane retractable roofing panels. Completed in 2009, the three-million-square-foot venue set a precedent in architectural design and construction.
