Shoreline Amphitheater

A roof that rocks—Birdair’s tensile design takes center stage at Shoreline Amphitheater.

Location: Mountain View, CA USA
Fabric Type: PTFE Fiberglass
Market Sector: Entertainment / Leisure
Project Size: 81,360 sq.ft.
Architect: SWA Group
Engineer: Horst Berger & Partners
Owner: City of Mountain View and Bill Graham
General Contractor: Spersey Construction
Completion Date: March 1, 1988

Birdair’s tensile membrane roof at Shoreline Amphitheater exemplifies the power of lightweight engineering shaped into an iconic architectural form. Defined by its sweeping conical geometry, the structure rises gracefully above the venue, creating a striking visual landmark while efficiently channeling loads through its elegant design. Fabricated from durable PTFE-coated fiberglass membrane, the canopy provides long-term performance, weather resistance, and minimal maintenance, all while allowing soft, diffused natural light to enhance the atmosphere below. Spanning the amphitheater with minimal structural intrusion, the roof preserves clear sightlines and supports the venue’s acoustic experience. The result is a harmonious blend of form and function—an enduring, high-performance structure that reinforces Birdair’s leadership in innovative tensile design.
