Birdair, Inc. Receives 2009 IFAI International Award of Excellence

Exceptional Battery Park City Ferry Terminal Project Recognized

Published: October 14, 2009

Birdair, Inc., the leading specialty contractor of lightweight long-span roofing systems and tensile structures throughout the world, has received an International Award of Excellence from the Industrial Fabrics Association International (IFAI) for its work on the Battery Park City Ferry Terminal – a permanent floating ferry terminal in Battery Park City, NY.

The winners were announced as part of the IFAI Expo 2009 Trade Show and Symposiums, held September 23-25 at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, CA. Birdair participated as both an exhibitor and speaker at the annual industry event.

The Battery Park City Ferry Terminal project earned the IFAI Award of Excellence in the Fabric Structures category, specifically, Tensile Structures 558–2322 square meters. Projects were submitted in 28 categories and evaluated for complexity, design, workmanship, uniqueness and functionality.

Birdair served as the tensile roofing sub-contractor for the ferry terminal – the largest structure of its kind in the United States. The design for this unique canopy, built to cover terminal patrons, incorporated 24,440 square feet of PTFE SHEERFILL Architectural Membrane.

“This project was a unique and complex undertaking for Birdair,” explains Michele Roth, marketing manager for Birdair, Inc. “We are thrilled that the IFAI has again recognized our innovative work in the tensile architecture sector.”

Birdair is the proud recipient of multiple awards from the IFAI, including one for Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium – also known as Kuwait Stadium – in 2007. The IFAI is the only trade association in the world representing the entire specialty fabrics/technical textiles industry, and serves 2,100 companies in 58 countries.

As a full-service specialty contractor, Birdair offers complete design and engineering assistance and solutions throughout the design-build process, and has completed more than 1,200 tensile architecture installations worldwide.
