NYC Public Charter School Gets a Rooftop Makeover with Roof Combination of PTFE Membrane and Stainless Steel Mesh
KIPP, the largest network of public charter schools in the country is expanding its footprint in the Bronx with two new schools - one being a middle school for grades 5th through 8th located at 1504 Macombs Road. Part of this new 6-story school design includes a rooftop turf field with a new tensile membrane roof system by Birdair providing protection for kids to play various sports and gym classes. The roof will feature a combination of 4,000 sq.ft. of solid PTFE-coated fiberglass membrane on one half and approximately 8,000 sq.ft. of stainless steel mesh system on the other half. Birdair's scope of work includes design, engineering, fabrication and installation of the PTFE tensile fabric membrane, the stainless steel mesh, and clamping and hardware (supporting structural steel framing provided by others). Birdair's scope is expected to be completed in June 2023. The KIPP school experience offers students numerous advanced placement classes, robotics, theater, visual arts, graphic design, and athletics.
