Birdair to Elevate Entertainment: Building a Landmark PTFE Tensile Amphitheater on Schmitt Island in Dubuque
Anchoring the future of entertainment on Schmitt Island, a state-of-the-art open-air performance amphitheater is currently in the design phase and evolving to meet the needs of a dynamic and growing community. Set to open in summer 2026, this new Birdair tensile membrane structure with a hypar/saddle shaped design will be the centerpiece of the Schmitt Island recreation area and promises to be a regional destination for music, festivals, and large-scale events. Birdair's scope of work includes design, engineering, fabrication, and installation of the supporting structural steel framing, PTFE-coated fiberglass membrane, and membrane clamping hardware.
With a capacity to accommodate approximately 9,000 attendees on its expansive events lawn, the amphitheater offers a versatile and flexible open space perfect for a wide range of programming. From concerts and cultural performances to community celebrations, the venue is designed to attract audiences both locally and from neighboring states. Guests will enjoy a full event experience with access to food trucks and other local vendors, along with a planned VIP terrace that provides an elevated view of the stage and exclusive amenities. The VIP area will be seamlessly connected to Q Casino + Resort, enhancing convenience and access for premium guests.
