Rockaway Beachfront Gets New Performance Space Featuring a Birdair PTFE Tensile Membrane Structure
Completed late 2022, the performance space is located in the plaza along Shorefront Parkway between Beach 94th Street and Beach 95th Street. It features a PVC tensile membrane structure shaped to emulate a clam shell design by Birdair. With a total combined plan area of 2,220 sq.ft., the 3 series of tensile canopies are identical in shape and will be a mix of PVC mesh and solid fabric.
The performance space acts as an entryway and hub to the Rockaway Boardwalk. It is centrally located to nearby subway stations and is directly across from the main parking lot nearby the Cross Bay Blvd Bridge. Nearby amenities include the beach and boardwalk, comfort stations, concession buildings, and other shorefront parkway recreational areas. Based on the Rockaway conceptual plan, the performance space is a part of a plan to rebuild a cohesive recreational space along Shorefront Parkway spanning from Beach 108th Street to Beach 73rd street.
Birdair's scope includes design-build of the supporting structural steel framing, PVC solid and mesh fabric membrane and the membrane attachment system.
