Stade de la Licorne Amiens

Stade de la Licorne Amiens, Where Tradition Meets Innovation with Taiyo Europe's ETFE Magic

Location: Amiens, France
Fabric Type: ETFE Film
Market Sector: Stadiums / Arenas
Project Size: 107,639 sq.ft.
Architect: Gasnier Gossart, Atelier d´Architecture, Amiens
Engineer: Taiyo Europe
Completion Date: April 1, 2018

In 2018, the Stade de la Licorne Amiens underwent a significant transformation. Its entire perimeter was enveloped in a transparent TensoSky® ETFE-film cover, extending from the nearly horizontal roof above the spectators to the nearly vertical stadium facades. This expansive, see-through surface encompassed approximately 108,000 square feet in total. The task of planning, producing, and constructing this stadium cover was entrusted to Taiyo Europe, Birdair's sister company, which successfully navigated the French approval procedure on a case-by-case basis (ATEx) for the project.

To ensure the stability of the structure over such large spans, the tightly tensioned TensoSky® ETFE film was supported by slender stainless steel ropes enclosed within transparent rope pockets. This ingenious design allowed the system to efficiently withstand high wind and snow loads, transferring these forces to the steel structure and ultimately to the reinforced concrete foundations. This construction method, using the lightweight TensoSky® ETFE film system, was pivotal in achieving the architects' vision of creating a light and transparent stadium enclosure that offered significant protection from the elements while preserving clear sightlines to the surroundings. In the case of the Stade de la Licorne in Amiens, Taiyo Europe executed this architectural vision to perfection.
