Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium To Feature Tensile Membrane Roofing From Birdair

New Delhi Stadium to Install Asia’s Largest Tensile Roof

Published: May 26, 2010

Birdair, Inc., the leading specialty contractor of lightweight long-span roofing and tensile structures throughout the world, will serve as the roofing subcontractor for the retrofit of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, India.

Birdair’s project role consists of designing, manufacturing and supplying the membrane panels that will make up the facility’s 54,000 square meter tensile roof, the largest of its kind in Asia. As subcontractor to Birdair, Taiyo Membrane Corporation (TMC) will provide the installation and construction supervision of the roof.

The 75,000-seat capacity stadium will feature an open-air roofing system formed from PTFE SHEERFILL Architectural Membrane. PTFE SHEERFILL Architectural Membrane, manufactured by Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics, is the first ENERGY STAR® qualified and Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) certified architectural fabric membrane.

“Birdair has the experience and expertise to work with the project team to successfully complete the project,” explains Tom Wuerch, Senior Vice President for Birdair. “The end result will be a tensile membrane roof that spans over 240 meters that is visually appealing, sustainable and functional.”

Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium originally opened in 1982 and is undergoing renovations to meet international standards to host the XIX Commonwealth Games. The facility will serve as the site of the opening and closing ceremonies as well as athletic events.

In addition to Birdair and TMC, the project team also consists of the Government of India, engineer Schlaich Bergerman and Partners (Germany), architects GMP (Germany), and local General Contractors Shapoorji Pallonji & Co Ltd. Cables were supplied by Pfeifer Seil- und Hebetechnik GmbH and heavy lift equipment by VSL International Ltd.

To date, Birdair has completed work on more than 85 sporting venues worldwide, integrating tensile architecture into a variety of single-sport and multi-purpose stadiums and arenas. Birdair brings expert knowledge and innovative techniques to every project to meet both facility and patron needs.
