Mexico City Shopping Center Signs Contract for Birdair Tensile Structures

PTFE to Add Aesthetic and Functional Benefits to Coyoacan Oasis

Published: September 18, 2012

A shopping center in Mexico’s capital city will soon have enhanced daylighting, durability and visual appeal thanks to Birdair. The company will serve as roofing subcontractor for Coyoacan Oasis shopping center in Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico.

Birdair was awarded the design-build contract for the new retail destination in the Coyoacan section of Mexico City. The facility will receive five custom tensile structures comprised of 162,247 square feet of PTFE, a Teflon®-coated woven fiberglass membrane.

There are five total fabric structures being built on the mall’s campus. In the lobby area, there is the entrance structure where it will shelter customers entering the mall. The mall’s main tensile structure will consist of a series of inverted cones to cover the mall’s primary corridor which features a lake and waterfall. Adjacent to the corridor will be another tensile structure that covers a plaza. The final two tensile structures are cones that will cover the entrance to Coyoacan Oasis’ green space. Furthermore, a signature water fountain feature will also be on display in the main part of the mall, a system designed by the firm Wet.

“The white PTFE tensile fabric membrane will allow natural daylight to filter through the Coyoacan Oasis’ corridors, providing a comfortable environment for shoppers while providing protection from inclement weather,” explains Hector Perez, business development manager for Birdair.

PTFE is capable of withstanding temperatures from minus 100 F to 500 F. It is also unaffected by UV rays, waterproof, and non-combustible. The fabric membrane is long-lasting, durable and requires minimal maintenance to retain its pristine appearance.

In addition to Birdair, the project team for Coyoacan Oasis includes Banca Mifel Fideicomiso in Mexico City and Colonnier y Asociados, a well known architect located in Insurgentes, Mexico City.

As a full-service specialty contractor, Birdair offers complete design-build solutions, and has completed more than 1,200 tensile architecture installations worldwide. Learn more at www.birdair.com.
