Gerald R. Ford Park Amphitheater

PTFE Membrane Roof to Cover the "The Lobby" Entrance Area at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater

Location: Vail, CO USA
Fabric Type: PTFE Fiberglass
Market Sector: Entertainment / Leisure
Project Size: 5,500 sq.ft.
Architect: Zehren & Associates
Engineer: Monroe & Newell
Owner: Vail Valley Foundation
General Contractor: Vail Valley Foundation
Completion Date: May 9, 2014

As winter transitioned into spring throughout the Vail Valley, the pace of construction at the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater increased thanks to the venue’s second phase of renovations. Designed to provide a new entrance experience and additional shelter from inclement weather, the new 5,500 sq.ft. PTFE membrane structure, dubbed “The Lobby,” serves as a social gathering point prior to entering the amphitheater. Ticket and bag checking will be facilitated at this point in order to allow for smooth entry to the venue. By nature of its orientation, dramatic shape and soaring forms, the canopy is a visual icon that not only identifies the amphitheater’s entrance but is visible from areas within Ford Park as well. The plaza, touted by supporters as much-needed "lobby" for the ampthitheater, was part of a package of improvements approved in 2012 by the Vail Town Council. Foundation board chairman Harry Frampton called the amphitheater "critical" to Vail's summer economy.

Birdair's scope of work includes design, fabrication, supply and installation of the PTFE fiberglass membrane, supporting structural steel, cables and clamping.
